Clinical and histopathological features of Retinoblastoma


Abstract
Unselected 38 eyes enucleated under the, diagnosis of retinoblastoma between 1964 and 1980 were studied clinico-pathologically. The earliest age of the patient was 3 months and the oldest was 7 years.
1. The most prevalent primary clinical symptom is leukocoria of 29 cases.
2. The size of tumor over 1/4 of the eye includes in more than 32 cases.
3. The histopathological findings of necrosis, calcification and hemorrhage manifest in majority of the cases and rubeosis iridis, cataract, glaucoma, and uveitis are complicated in considerably many cases.
4. Extension of tumor cells into the various tissues demonstrates in: optic disc 12, lamina cribrosa 8, optic (distal) nerve 5, choroid 11,- iris, ciliary body & sclera 8, vitreous 28, anterior & posterior chamber 12, and others (extrabulbar) 6.
The erroneous diagnosis rate appears rather high and this problematic factor is discussed for the early diagnosis of the malignant tumor of the retina
